Through the decades

Kenric is the oldest lesbian organisation in the UK and we’re proud of our history that now spans over 50 years.  From our archives we have gathered some articles, stories and pictures.

At the end of our 50th anniversary celebrations in 2015 was the historic walk through Kensington and Richmond.  It started at the Gateways Club – known to the early Kenric members – and finished at Pembroke Lodge.

50th Anniversary Kenric Walk

Members, back row from left; Mary Norton, Anny Knight – Kenric Drop-In and Jane Cook. Front row from left; June Hood – past Chair 1996/98 & 2008/9, Doreen Holley – first Chair 1965/66, Stephanie Dickinson – Chair since 2010 and Frankie Lawson – Editor 2010/15.

The photograph shows some members sporting their anniversary ‘Looking Good At 50’ T-shirts.  We were privileged to meet up with Doreen Holley, Kenric’s first chairperson – read her story The Accidental Chair.

From the very beginning to the present day, Kenric has always been run by a team of dedicated volunteer lesbians for lesbians throughout the UK.  If you have been part of that history, be proud and help us to continue.  If you’re new to Kenric, welcome to our family and the future of Kenric.
